1. Detailed map of human genome on target for 2003, says Professor

Record Control Number : 18271

Date : 2002-04-16

Category : Miscellaneous

General Information :

A detailed map of the entire human genome is on target for completion by the end of 2003, according to the President of the Human genome organisation Professor, Yoshi Sakaki.

Professor Sakaki, speaking at the seventh International Human Genome Meeting in Shanghai, China, said a precise map of over 90 per cent of the human genome is set to be completed next year, according to the BBC. He added that the breakthrough will help researchers find out which genes are responsible for diseases such as diabetes and cancer. He is hopeful that by using new genetic technology, medical treatments which target the faulty genes will be available a decade from now.

Professor Sakaki's comments follow a recent announcement by the European Commission that it has allocated 39.4 million euro of funding to three large-scale projects which aim to build on the achievements of the Human genome project. Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin said that the three projects, on the genetics of twins, mouse genomics and structural proteomics, will help to build on the new opportunities opened up by the decoding of the rough draft of the human genome, completed almost two years ago.

2. Children most at risk from environmental pollution, say experts

Record Control Number : 18277

Date : 2002-04-17

Category : Miscellaneous

General Information :

Children throughout Europe are exposed to unacceptable health risks from environmental pollution, according to experts from the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) .

A report published by the two organisations, 'Children's Health and environment: a review of evidence,' says that up to 40 per cent of the global burden of disease attributable to environmental factors is estimated to affect children below the age of five.

Children are especially vulnerable for a number of reasons according to the report: as developing organisms, they are particularly sensitive to the long-term consequences of early exposure; they are uniquely susceptible to specific chemicals; they are exposed to substances in their environment through picking things up and putting them in their mouths; and they have a higher uptake of potentially toxic substances because in proportion to their body weight they breathe, eat and drink more than adults. In addition, children have no choice about the factors they are exposed to.

'Children are at risk of exposure to more than 15,000 synthetic chemicals, almost all developed in the last 50 years, and to a variety of physical agents, such as polluted outdoor and indoor air, road traffic, contaminated food and water, unsafe buildings, contaminants in toys, radiation and environmental tobacco smoke,' explained EEA executive director Domingo Jiménez Beltrán.

He added that the spread of disorders such as asthma and cancer, which could be associated with environmental factors, is reaching unacceptably high levels.

Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström welcomed the report as a contribution to the preparation of policy responses on the issue. 'The European Union is setting the issue of children's environment and health high on the political agenda. The link between environmental degradation and poor health is clearly established, but we need further research in order to improve our understanding of these complex issues,' she said.

5. Commission awards 30 million euro to TEMPUS university cooperation projects

Record Control Number : 18278

Date : 2002-04-17

Category : Programme implementation

General Information :

The European Commission has selected 89 new projects for funding and approved 122 grants under the TEMPUS university cooperation programme for 2000 to 2006, which will together receive funding of 30 million euro from the EU.

The TEMPUS programme consists of joint actions between universities in the EU's Member States and third countries, and involves the development of sustainable cooperation networks and mobility grants for students and teachers.

The projects and grant applications selected under the TEMPUS III/CARDS programme are from countries in the western Balkans, whilst those selected under the TEMPUS III/TACIS programme are from eastern Europe and central Asia.

'I am again impressed by the diversity and quality of the projects selected by the Commission under this new TEMPUS round,' said Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Education and Culture. 'Thanks to this programme, networks are springing up linking universities from the Mediterranean to the frontiers of Asia. [...] The time has come to develop our university relations with third countries and create centres of university excellence in Europe to attract more students from all over the world,' she said.

In addition to funding joint networks and projects and facilitating mobility, the money will go towards introducing new university courses, improving university management and disseminating best practices.
